I never wouldâve imagined such a thing was possible, but Hicks died entirely too quickly. Almost as soon as the body went limp, a sense of horror flashed over me. What had I done? Iâd always been so good at planning. Patient, discriminate, even conniving. Never once had I let my feelings and impulses rule me as they had these past weeks.
I blame you, of course. You showed me that I still had a heart in there. And promptly shattered it to pieces.
But Hicks died so fast. I didnât even have a chance to tie him up properly before his heart gave out. I mustâve been angry, driving the knots down onto his throat.
I wasnât sorry he was dead, just that I wasnât allowed to fully appreciate his suffering while I was so wrapped up in my own thoughts. Worse still, when all was done and that glorious feeling of catharsis swept over meâleaving my body quieted and my skin cooledâI found myself with a dead body to hide. Still during work hours with customers swarming throughout the building, not to mention everyone who worked here.
âYouâre so stupid and weak.â My father would always say that. âJust like your mother. You were supposed to get my brain and your motherâs looks, but of course, you fucked up and got it backward.â
I saw his sneer as he turned from where I lay, bleeding from my mouth and my ear, thoroughly castigated for the crime of being me.
What would the old man think if he could see me now? Someday soon Iâd have the answer to that question.
That day when I told you a little about my fatherâI was already in love with you by thenâyour gentle kindness sealed it. You were so much like my mother. I shouldâve known the death sentence inherent in that.
I was unable to move Hicksâs body because of Melissa. She stayed late, like she often did, desperate for an opportunity to be used again. And used she was, more roughly than ever before. A hand on her throat, spit on her face, her lean and tight body twisted like a broken marionette.
Sometimes, I wanted Melissa dead more than any of the others. Other times, I was able to appreciate how honestly and completely she succumbed. The woman knew exactly what she was and what she was good for. She didnât pretend to be something else. Not like Aliyah or Helen or any the rest. Melissa wore her shame and depravity like a badge. She took all the punishment meted out to her with whatever grace such a creature like her could muster.
She would be one of the last to die.
All afternoon and evening, Hicksâs body sat in a locked custodianâs closet. The cleaners came early every morning and would go in there to fetch out vacuums and floor polishers. So after everyone else had finally gone home, I dragged the body out to my ride and tossed it in the back. It was already starting to stink.
